Tour de Dog

By Guest Blogger Mark Verner

Tour de Dog is the human-canine team of David Sylvester and his dog Chiva. They are traveling across North America by bicycle to encourage and to teach responsible animal/human relationships.

David is a biomedical engineer and vaccine scientist who after two years of working on a Bill and Melinda Gates Grand Challenge Project is redirecting his career and following his true passion in life: animal welfare.

Chiva is a lean 50 pound, shepherd, husky, boxer, chow mix, who David met when she was just a few months old at the Delaware SPCA. It was dog and human best friends at first sight! Chiva was born September 3, 2005. The name Chiva comes from a transportation bus that is used to navigate the mountains of Colombia, South America. David spent two summers in Medellin, Colombia, and named her in hopes that she would explore mountains with him.

David and Chiva started their North American journey in Seattle, WA back on March 13, 2008. As of the posting of this blog entry, David and Chiva were leaving Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and entering Ontario, Canada. Their journey can be followed via their website Tour de Dog. Their website is a daily blog that David updates regularly and posts pictures of their journey. Donations can be made through their website also. David and Chiva have biked over 3,945 miles, and have raised over $3,490. The money being raised is donated to animal shelters visited by David and Chiva throughout North America. David and Chiva also stop off at local animal events, fundraiders, and Boys & Girls Clubs to talk about his journey and to bring awareness of the treatment of animals and human/animal relationships.

The Tour de Dog plans to accomplish their goals in three stages:

STAGE 1
  • Touring animal shelters and control facilities to gain knowledge
  • Networking with organizations, groups, and individuals
  • Speaking engagements and presentations with communities and media outlets
  • Blogging, reporting, and sharing stories and findings
  • Fundraising to support shelters and facilities that are visited

STAGE 2

  • Directing a video documentary that predominately details current human/animal relationships in the United States
  • Fundraising to support project

STAGE 3

  • Implementing solutions to improve facilities in need.

Not only does the Tour de Dog website journal the travels of David and his best friend Chiva, it also tells the many stories of the people they have met on their journey. Take for instance Robert Williams (pictured above). David ran into Robert fifteen miles east of Eureka, NV. He is pushing a baby carriage from the Golden Gate Bridge in California to Washington D.C. to raise autism awareness. David says it's always nice to exchange stories with other travelers such as Robert. Click here to learn more about his journey.

David and Chiva also met a hearty group of climbers known as the "Cops on Top" (pictured above). The group consisted of Nevadan police officers who climb Boundary Peak (highest peak in Nevada) annually in tribute to fallen officers. David said that crossing paths with this team of hikers was inspirational and timely, and they generously gave him and Chiva food and fresh water.

David and Chiva's travels across North America are definitley inspirational. I have been following their journey since they started back in March and I will continue to follow them until the end. I wish them safe travels. Please visit their website, Tour de Dog, and check out their journey across North America.
