See who else made the list... Click here for the full article.Best Values in Public Colleges 2009-101. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Undergraduate Enrollment: 17,895 SAT: 75 percent scored 600 or higher on verbal/math; ACT: 82 percent scored 24 or higher Student/Faculty Ratio: 14 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 75 percent/88 percent Total In-State Cost: $15,296 Total Out-of-State Cost: $33,184 Average Debt at Graduation: $14,936 Chapel Hill, a consistent winner of Kiplinger's top honors, maintains its lofty spot in part for its ability to attract and keep highflying students. This year, it fielded more than 23,000 applications and admitted about 7,400, giving it a competitive 32 percent admission rate. 2. University of Florida Undergraduate Enrollment: 34,654 SAT: 65 percent; ACT: 73 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 20 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 54 percent/81 percent Total In-State Cost: $12,863 Total Out-of-State Cost: $32,234 Average Debt at Graduation: $15,318 Low annual in-state costs and diverse academic programs are just a few reasons why this school ranks in the top of our list. University of Virginia Undergraduate Enrollment: 15,208 SAT: 78 percent; ACT: 83 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 15 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 85 percent/93 percent Total In-State Cost: $19,312 Total Out-of-State Cost: $41,312 Average Debt at Graduation: $19,016 Considered a public Ivy League school, the University of Virginia doesn't come with a top-tier price tag for in-state students with financial need. Undergraduate Enrollment: 5,850 SAT: 84 percent; ACT: 83 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 11 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 84 percent/92 percent Total In-State Cost: $20,566 Total Out-of-State Cost: $40,358 Average Debt at Graduation: $12,859 This public school, which is the second oldest college in the U.S., looks and feels like an elite Ivy League institution. Binghamton University (SUNY) Undergraduate Enrollment: 11,821 SAT: 66 percent; ACT: 83 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 20 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 69 percent/80 percent Total In-State Cost: $18,175 Total Out-of-State Cost: $26,075 Average Debt at Graduation: $14,541 Binghamton charges $26,075 a year to students who are not New York residents -- only one-third more than the in-state price. The school's large number of international students and its dual-degree programs with universities in Mexico, Russia and Turkey give the term out of state new meaning; but Binghamton's strong academics and affordable price attract interest from students across the U.S. as well. 6. University of Georgia Undergraduate Enrollment: 25,467 SAT: 58 percent; ACT: 62 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 18 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 51 percent/80 percent Total In-State Cost: $16,636 Total Out-of-State Cost: $34,846 Average Debt at Graduation: $14,343 Most in-state students qualify for the merit-based HOPE scholarship, which covers tuition and mandatory fees -- making the school a great value for Georgia residents. It also is home to Georgia's State Botanical Garden, State Museum of Art and State Museum of Natural History. 7. University of Maryland, College Park Undergraduate Enrollment: 26,431 SAT: 66 percent; ACT: 76 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 18 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 63 percent/82 percent Total In-State Cost: $18,455 Total Out-of-State Cost: $34,392 Average Debt at Graduation: $20,091 University of Maryland, known for its engineering, journalism and computer-science programs, has risen to our top ten by keeping in-state costs virtually unchanged while improving on quality, especially in its graduation rates. Maryland also provides need-based financial aid to 50 percent of its students. 9. SUNY Geneseo Undergraduate Enrollment: 5,451 SAT: 80 percent; ACT: 87 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 19 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 58 percent/78 percent Total In-State Cost: $17,176 Total Out-of-State Cost: $25,076 Average Debt at Graduation: $18,700 Like the other State University of New York school on our list (Binghamton), SUNY Geneseo is a bargain for out-of-state students. North Carolina State University Undergraduate Enrollment: 24,741 SAT: 36 percent; ACT: 56 percent Student/Faculty Ratio: 16 Graduation Rate 4-yr./6-yr.: 37 percent/70 percent Total In-State Cost: $14,390 Total Out-of-State Cost: $26,875 Average Debt at Graduation: $14,996 This large university comprises ten colleges in disciplines including textiles, design, agriculture and veterinary medicine. At $14,390, its annual in-state costs are below the average ($15,213) for four-year public institutions and second-lowest in our top ten, after the University of Florida. NC State's relatively low out-of-state sticker price, $26,875, makes it number 9 for out-of-state value. Labels: Local Events, Real Events

Once In A Blue Moon - Perfect Party Theme!
It happens only rarely, when small particles in the atmosphere scatter more red light than blue, allowing less red light to be seen from the ground. This makes the moon temporarily appear blue. Although this phenomenon is quite rare, it has altered the meaning of the phrase “once in a blue moon,” which is now commonly understood to mean “every now and then." Roughly every 19 years, you get the blue moon double where you get two blue moons in a year. The last time that happened was in 1999.*Year: 2009 Month Date and Time: December 31st at 19:11 (or 7:11 pm).
That makes this the perfect party theme for New Year's this year!

October 3rd - Mooncake Festival
Mooncakes - a delicate strong Asian tradition you might want to give some thought to... We found some stunning examples to help inspire you. This year, the Chinese people celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival with dances, feasting and moon gazing on October 3rd. Step into the wonders of these remarkable pastries at a local Chinese bakery. These little cakes earned their popularity during the Yuan Dynasty (1200 A.D.- 1368 A.D.) It is said that mooncakes - which the Mongols did not eat - were the perfect vehicle for hiding and passing along plans for the rebellion. Families were instructed not to eat the mooncakes until the day of the moon festival, which is when the rebellion took place. (In another version plans were passed along in mooncakes over several years of Mid-Autumn festivals, but the basic idea is the same). Roughly the size of a human palm, these mooncakes are quite filling, meant to be cut diagonally in quarters and passed around. More elaborate versions of mooncakes contain four egg yolks (representing the four phases of the moon). Besides lotus seed paste, other traditional fillings include red bean paste and black bean paste. Today, mooncakes may be filled with everything from dates, nuts, and fruit to Chinese sausages. More exotic creations include green tea mooncakes, and ping pei or snowskin mooncakes, a Southeast Asian variation made with cooked glutinous rice flour. Haagen-Daz has even gotten into the act by introducing a line of ice cream mooncakes in Asian markets. We are showing you some fabulous examples from various sources. Top left: Intercontinental - Singapore, Middle - right top: Bakerzin, Middle row: Carlton Hotel, Singapore, Large middle: Peony Jade, Singapore, Middle green apple cakes from Bossacafez, green cake: Goodwood Park Hotel, Singapore, Bottom left Royal Series from Tung Lok, Bottom center: Fairmont Singapore, bottom right: also the Fairmont - this one with hazelnut filling. What's UP?
What's UP? Enveloping the room is the specialty of those infamous event decor companies we see at shows like the Northwest Event Show, so thought we would inspire you with a glimpse of some of their handy work. Just about the time you think you have thought of everything to set the atmosphere, step back and think "Up". Right now that's even easier with the release of the movie UP, by Disney. Do you ever walk into a room that has been set and feel surrounded by some special mood? All of us have and there is a good chance it has everything to do with including the ceiling. Recently on our wedding blog, "Lucky In Love" we shared the inspiration of a venue reset by Jolene Jang and husband Vinh. That amazing room transformation was completed by Prop Gallery West.Depending on what type of room you are visualizing, or if you just plan want their inspiration, we strongly suggest contacting PJ Hummel and Co, Robinson Designs, Rented Elegance or Balloon Masters. If you can think it - let them do it! Labels: Real Events, What's new
Something To Really Smile About . . .
We rarely write about our personal lives on this blog, but there comes a time when you just need to toot your own horn once in a while. At B&E, we are much more than co-workers, we are a family. Beyond what we do in the office, we care about each other's lives, and support each other through the highs and lows of everyday life. Today I am happy to report one of those highs. Alexis Pellegrini, who has worked for B&E for seven years, and her husband Peter, recently turned their 8 year dream into a reality. Peter, an orthodontist, opened his first solo practice in Everett, WA on August 3rd. We've watched the two of them stay focused as Peter trekked through four years of dental school at the University of Washington, and three more years for his orthodontic residency at Oregon Health Science University. Now they begin a new chapter as business owners of a beautiful practice in Everett. Alexis, of course, remains a part of our B&E team, and it has been great to see how the skills she has learned working with us have been able to help develop Dr. Pellegrini's web and marketing materials. We wish them many years of success! Learn more about Dr. Pellegrini at www.everettbraces.com Penny Pickett Simmons General Manager at B&E Labels: Industry Alerts, Local Events, Real Events

Plan The Perfect Valentine's Day With Some Oldies But Goodies
When it comes to Valentine's Day and sharing it with your loved one, planning some traditional activities is always a winning movement. Here are some quick ideas to help you prepare for February 14th. Top Row: Sweetie Pie cookies from Williams Sonoma; Dinner and a show at Teatro Zinzanni in Seattle or San Francisco Second Row: An Affair To Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr; Flowers from Metropolitan Market; Dinner for two at home from Food NetworkThird Row: SPAAHH at Hotel 1000 in Seattle, WA; Dancing couple photo by Andrew WestPlan 1: Stay In. If you plan to stay in for Valentine's Day, make the most of it by preparing everything from scratch. Make a sweet dessert and prepare a Valentine's menu. If you are not a great cook, no fear. Most of the restaurants around town offer take-out so call ahead of time and order your favorite meals for two. Finish the night with a romantic movie like "An Affair To Remember" and enjoy the company of your sweetheart. Plan 2: Hit the Town. We suggest a dinner and a show option. Find out what is playing in your area and plan a night at the theatre, comedy club, jazz club or ballet. Your best bet is to find a place that serves food while you watch like Teatro Zinzanni in Seattle, WA. Be sure to dress the part in your best duds and make the most of this holiday that only comes around once a year. Plan 3: Couple's Spa Day. Often Valentine's Day is best celebrated when you and your love can take a step back from the everyday stresses of life to recharge and rejuvinate. What better way to energize yourself than with a spa package for two? Labels: Activities, Real Events
